Boat Restoration

An important part of our activities will be to provide tuition in traditional boat building and maintenance, access to history, heritage, culture, art and the running of club activities.  The Boat Building / Restoration program started in 2005 is a continual process for each year of students who elect to join the project.  The Outcomes will be restored heritage sailing vessel for use with sail training and inter club racing and community regattas.  Also the building of pulling skiffs for the start of a 'Waterman' ferry fleet for community use. These young people may be at risk and the programs are designed to keep them engaged in the education process and engage them with community activities.

Art/Design Program

The Art Design program in 2005 was a great success and the students negotiated with Marley Gallery Leichhardt for exhibition space for their art work plus two boats they have designed art work onto and a ships figurehead.  The exhibition was a great success. We hope to continue with this type of activity with the community.

Spoken histories

The next exciting part of the ongoing Youth Mentoring Project will be to start the digitising of spoken histories based on senior citizens experiences on the harbour.  Also the possibility to be involved with the making of a documentary of the History of Sydney Harbour.  The project has already started with dedicated director, producer and camera professionals.

 Sponsorship

The committee is asking local business to come forward with sponsorship for youth projects now being developed with Sydney Secondary College, TAFE, Inner City Youth Centers and the Sydney Heritage Fleet.  We have permission from NSW Maritime to base the training boats at the Bank Street redevelopment site under the south pylon of Anzac Bridge. This site will become a multi use community foreshore facility and plans are underway.  The club will conduct the Pyrmont Regatta in December every year as a celebration of the maritime heritage of the area.
