Pyrmont Regatta The Regatta will be an opportunity for the community to gather on the beautiful foreshore areas and present the city with a spectacular cultural event.
MEDIA RELEASE FOR PYRMONT REGATTA Boxing Day 2005
Boxing Day at Pyrmont Point Park with its great picnic facilities will be the best and closest vantage area for all to enjoy the harbour and have fun at this unique aquatic event. Mr Michael De Dutton York OAM patron of the Pyrmont Heritage Boating Club reviving the regatta said. ‘ The Regatta is for youth education and enjoyment’. The club formed in July 2005 with the purpose of reviving maritime heritage in Pyrmont after the original 1880 Pyrmont Regatta Cup was discovered in the care of the historic Balmain Sailing Club. Sailing Officer of the club Mr Jonathon Bogais said. ‘ The inner city youth centres are showing great interest in this new opportunity. We have just completed a 16 week Competent Crew course for 16 year 9 students from Leichhardt High School which was sponsored b Leichhardt Council’. Mr Bogais said. ‘The club offered a feasible economic program and the students maintained attendance, learned new skills and had to work in teams to achieve their goal, which was to race two 17th century longboats by sail and oar’. Secretary Mr Michael Bolton-Hall said. ‘ The Regatta is an opportunity for the youth to be involved in the early stages of development and therefore create a unique cultural event’. He said, ‘ The young men and women trained very hard and mastered the longboats and will feature in a sail and oar race during the Regatta’. The Committee of the club with help from Pyrmont Community has recently won a seed grant from Sydney City Council to provide training for youth in the restoration and operation of a number of historic vessels. This project brings together TAFE, Sydney Heritage Fleet, Sydney City and the Inner City Youth Centres to provide qualifications for jobs and social skills for the future. |
